The Three Levels of Sedation

Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) can relieve many patients' anxiety. With nitrous oxide, once the procedure is completed the patient may return to normal daily activity.

Oral Conscious Sedation involves taking a pill before the appointment. The patient’s vital signs are monitored. Many patients fall asleep during their visit. This level of sedation does require a chaperone for the ride to and from the office.

Intravenous Conscious Sedation usually involves taking a pill prior to the appointment. The patient’s vital signs are monitored. An IV is inserted and the sedation drugs are administered as needed to maintain a satisfactory level of sedation. With IV sedation the level of sedation has is a much higher level of control. This level of sedation does require a chaperone for the ride to and from the office.

Is Sedation for Me?

All patients of all ages, who experience dental anxiety, are good candidates for sedation dentistry. If you have any of the these fears or concerns, ask our team about patient-focused sedation as an option.

Common questions about sedation dentistry

Will I feel anything during my treatment?

Dr. Spees & his staff will do everything necessary to assure that your dental treatment is completely comfortable. Patients can expect to wake up comfortable & with little or no memory of their treatment.

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Sedation dentistry has been proven to be a safe and effective way for many patients to receive dental treatment.

How long will it take the sedation to wear off?

The time it takes for the sedatives to wear off depends on the dose you've received, how long your treatment is, and how quick your own body can recover. Since being under sedation causes drowsiness, it is recommended that you have a family member or friend drive you to and from your appointment. After your treatment, you will not want to drive, drink alcohol, or operate machinery.
