New improvements in laser technology are changing the way we treat many dental conditions at Kevin Spees Dentistry. With state-of-the-art technology and methods, we can treat a variety of conditions quickly, effectively, and comfortably.
What is laser dentistry?
Lasers create powerful, concentrated energy in the form of light. They offer increased precision without the painful side effects of traditional surgeries. With lasers, we can restore and renew oral tissues in a fraction of the time and all with minimal discomfort.
Because of the benefits lasers provide, they are becoming more common across every healthcare industry. In dentistry, we can use lasers for cold sores, for frenectomies, to re-contour the gums, and to fight gum disease, among other things.
Lasers are less invasive, are nearly pain-free, lead to faster recovery times, and require significantly less time in the dental chair than most traditional procedures.
Our office performs a variety of laser therapy procedures with the Delight Laser, Biolase Epic Laser, and Diagnodent laser.
What is the Delight Laser?
The Delight Laser is one of the four primary laser devices Dr. Spees uses for treatments. This laser is an Erbium/YAG laser that can be used on hard and soft tissue. It can be used to remove caries quickly and effectively – usually without any anesthetic. It works exceptionally well on primary teeth and smaller cavities in adults
The Delight Laser is especially useful when treating children, as it allows us to remove and repair any areas of decay in children's teeth without giving them an anesthetic shot. Also, laser therapy usually results in lower recovery times – making the Delight Laser great for treating kids.
In addition to treating cavities, the Delight Laser is also used to perform frenectomies (tongue-tie procedures), soft tissue biopsies, and aids in healing soft tissue lesions.
What is the Biolase Epic Laser?
The Biolase Epic Laser is a diode laser primarily used on soft oral tissue. It offers an advanced way to perform a variety of cosmetic and restorative treatments. This laser can be used for tissue removal in cosmetic gum contouring, sterilization of infected gum pockets, and the removal of infected gum tissue. In addition to this, it is also used to treat canker sores and cold sores. Often, after being treated by the Biolase Epic Laser, cold sores do not return!
What is the Diagnodent Laser?
The Diagnodent laser is used for diagnosing caries or cavities. This laser penetrates the tooth to diagnose caries at their earliest stage. It allows Dr. Spees to find and treat cavities early – before decay has time to spread and compromise the health of the tooth.

Laser Dentistry FAQs
Advances in laser technology have transformed the way many dental procedures are performed, enabling more precise and comfortable care. At Kevin Spees Dentistry, we use laser dentistry to deliver patient‑focused treatment plans that improve efficiency, comfort, and outcomes. Below are frequently asked questions that help patients better understand what laser dentistry means for their care beyond the basics.
Who is a good candidate for laser dentistry?
Laser dentistry can be appropriate for many patients, including adults and children, depending on the type of dental condition being treated. Because lasers can be used on both hard and soft tissue, your dentist will determine suitability based on factors such as the size of a cavity, gum condition, or the type of soft‑tissue procedure needed. An exam is always necessary to determine whether laser treatment is the best option for your specific case.
Is laser dentistry safe for children?
Yes. Certain laser procedures are especially helpful for pediatric patients because they can reduce the need for anesthetic injections and shorten treatment time. Laser use may also support quicker healing, which can be beneficial for children who are anxious or sensitive during dental visits.
Does laser dentistry replace traditional dental tools completely?
Not in every situation. While lasers can be used for many restorative, cosmetic, and periodontal applications, some treatments may still require traditional instruments. Laser dentistry is best viewed as a complementary solution that allows for a more conservative approach when appropriate.
What is recovery like after laser dental treatment?
Recovery varies depending on the procedure being performed. Many patients experience minimal post‑treatment discomfort and reduced healing times due to the precision of laser technology. We will provide aftercare instructions tailored to your treatment to support optimal healing.
Can laser dentistry help with dental anxiety?
Laser dentistry is often helpful for patients with dental anxiety because it may reduce noise, vibration, and the need for drills or injections during certain procedures. These features contribute to a calmer and more comfortable experience for many patients.
Does dental insurance cover laser dentistry?
Insurance coverage varies by plan and by procedure. In many cases, insurance reimburses based on the type of treatment rather than the technology used. Our administrative team can help review benefits in advance and answer coverage questions.
How does laser dentistry support preventive care?
Lasers can assist with early detection and treatment by identifying issues sooner and addressing them before they progress. Catching problems at earlier stages can help preserve more natural tooth structure and support long‑term oral health.
